Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has won the La Liga Player of the Month award for the very first time in his career. Despite winning 5 Ballon d’Or awards while playing for the Spanish giants, the Argentine has failed to win the La Liga Player of the Month award since its inception in 2013.

But La Pulga can now breathe a sigh of relief after finally clinching the monthly award. As a matter of fact, no Barca player had ever won the award until December last year, when Neymar Jr was announced the winner.
In January, Messi scored six goals in five appearances for Luis Enrique’s side, a performance that has propelled them to the top of La Liga table with 54 points, three ahead of second-placed Atletico Madrid.
Messi, 28, has now scored a total of 12 goals in La Liga this season in 17 appearances. His tally would have risen higher than that, but the lethal forward picked up an injury against Las Palmas in late September last year, something that kept him out of action for almost two months.
