Preview

Atletico Madrid are 90 minutes away from their first UEFA Champions League semifinal in seven years. However, the Spanish giant boast a slim lead over their quarterfinal opponent Dortmund, who they will visit this Tuesday at the Signal Iduna Park for their highly-anticipated second-leg battle.

Dortmund will want to put their home advantage to good use when Atletico Madrid come rolling through the city. However, their first-half performance against the Spanish delivered several warning signs for the Bundesliga outfit.

Edin Terzic's men were second best in everything, conceding twice thanks to goals from Rodrigo de Paul and Samuel Lino. Fortunately, Sebastien Haller rescued something for the German heavyweights in the second half after upping the tempo, with the Ivorian scoring in the 81st minute.

A 2-1 deficit is easier to overcome than a 2-0 gap but the home side will need to drastically improve nonetheless.

Dortmund have not reached the UEFA Champions League semifinals since their iconic 2012-13 run under Jurgen Klopp in which they made the final before ultimately losing to Bayern Munich. However, die Schwarzgelben have already surprised a few this season in Europe, finishing top in a group that contained PSG, AC Milan, and Newcastle.

Reus and Co. then locked horns with PSV in the round of 16, beating the Dutch outfit 3-1 on aggregate to make the quarterfinals for the first time since 2021.

Domestically, however, things have been shaky. While Leverkusen became the first team to beat Bayern Munich to the title in over a decade, BVB are facing a race to finish in the top four and qualify for next season's revamped UEFA Champions League campaign.

Dortmund enter this clash on the back of a 2-1 victory over Borussia M'gladbach and have triumphed in all but one of their last six league fixtures. However, Terzic's side currently sit fifth in the table, level on points with fourth-placed RB Leipzig but behind on goal difference.

Atletico Madrid, on the flip side, are slowly regaining form after suffering a frustrating 3-0 loss to Barcelona in La Liga roughly a month ago. Since then, Simeone's men have played Villarreal, Dortmund, and Girona, winning all three games in succession.

That victory over Girona came in their most recent fixture, with Griezmann scoring a brace on both sides of Angel Correa's 45th-minute goal. That result helped Los Rojiblancos put some distance between themselves and Copa del Rey champions Athletic Club in the top-four race.

UEFA Champions League form matters most in this competition and fortunately, that also reads well for Griezmann and Co. after their unforgettable victory over Inter Milan in the round of 16. Not only did the Spanish club beat one of Europe's teams this season, but they also fought back from 2-0 down to overcome the Nerazzurri.

Atletico lost the first leg 1-0 and conceded first in the return fixture. However, goals from Griezmann — who else? — and Depay forced the tie into extra time and eventually penalties, with Simeone's men emerging victorious through spot kicks.

Additionally, the Spanish side also won their group. However, their dominant first-half performance over Dortmund ended in a mere one-goal advantage and that could come back to bite the visitors.

Team news

Dortmund: Jadon Sancho was unavailable for BVB's weekend victory but only due to illness and is thus back in contention for this game. However, the same is not true for Ramy Bensebaini, who is sidelined for this tie, while Sebastien Haller is a doubt. Donyell Malen, however, has regained fitness.

Atletico: Mario Hermoso should be available for the visitors but Memphis Depay and Thomas Lemar are both unavailable due to injuries. Meanwhile, Saul Niguez is a doubt. However, Alvaro Morata, Jose Gimenez, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Axel Witsel should all return to the lineup after being rested over the weekend.

Key stats

  • There have been no draws in any of the last five showdowns between these two sides.

  • Dortmund only narrowly trail in the head-to-head record, winning two but losing the other three.

  • Atletico Madrid, however, have won the last two meetings with the German side.

  • Interestingly enough, while Los Rojiblancos edge the head-to-head record three to two, BVB have outscored the Spaniard by seven goals to six in this encounter.

  • The last time Simeone's men visited the Signal Iduna Park, they suffered a horrible 4-0 loss in the 2018-19 group stage.

  • The Madrid heavyweights have historically struggled against German clubs, winning only twice in their last 10 away games against clubs from that country (D1, L7).

  • Diego Simeone has overseen four defeats in a row against German clubs.

  • In contrast, Dortmund have lost only twice in 13 UEFA Champions League home games against Spanish clubs.

  • However, die Schwarzgelben still failed to win eight of those 13 encounters (W5) and failure to win on Tuesday will dump them out of the UEFA Champions League.
