Current form: Roma vs Real Madrid

Roma saw their three unbeaten run in Serie A come to an abrupt end as the Lupi slipped up in a surprise 1-0 defeat to Udinese over the weekend. The Giallorossi have really struggled for consistency in Serie A, dropping points against lower-ranked sides like SPAL and Bologna and the loss to an Udinese side who have been in free-fall all season just is yet another black mark against Eusebio Di Francesco's team this season.

Still, Roma have done well in the Champions League, and sit in second spot in their quartet. Injuries have also taken a toll on the Lupi as Di Francesco struggles to balance his squad for two competitions, and the hosts will come into this contest missing a whole slew of key players, including midfield veteran Daniele De Rossi. Star striker Edin Dzeko, who has been a consistent goal-scoring threat for Roma is a major doubt for this upcoming fixture, leaving Di Francesco with a huge selection headache up front as he has netted five goals so far for the club in the group stages this campaign.

As for Real Madrid, the current Champions League holders come into this fixture having suffered a shocking 3-0 loss to Eibar over the weekend. That result leaves Los Blancos sitting in sixth spot in La Liga, six points behind surprise league leaders Sevilla. So far, Real Madrid have lost five times in just 13 games so far this season. To put that in perspective, under Zinedine Zidane's tenure during the 2017/2018 campaign, they lost a grand total of six, and arguably, the club's lowest point was their embarrassing 5-1 defeat to Barcelona during the Clasico on October 28th which marked Julen Lopetegui's final game on the bench.

In the Champions League, however, save for a surprising 1-0 defeat to CSKA Moscow, which was their fifth loss in their last 36 European games, Los Blancos have been largely solid, and thus sit on top of their quartet after the first four matchdays.

Current position: Roma vs Real Madrid

Both Real Madrid and Roma are looking good to seal a spot in the round of 16, although Roma will be determined to get revenge on the Spanish giants after their humiliating 3-0 defeat on matchday one. With CSKA Moscow desperate to get their foot in the door, neither side will want to drop points here.

Real Madrid will qualify for the round of 16 if they do a double over the Lupi and pick up all three points at the Stadio Olimpico. However, even if Roma get revenge and win, should Czech outfit Viktoria Plzen pick up their first win of the competition and beat CSKA Moscow, Santiago Solari's side are still through to the round of 16 nonetheless.

Roma, meanwhile, could draw Real Madrid and still seal their spot. If CSKA Moscow fail to win, the Lupi will still be through, but if the Russian outfit do win and Roma lose, things will get a bit uncomfortable for Di Francesco's side heading into matchday six. If Roma lose and CSKA Moscow also lose, the Giallorossi will also seal passage through - so Serie A supporters certainly will have an eye on the earlier clash between CSKA Moscow and Viktoria Plzen to see what happens.
