As is usually the case in the Champions League and the Europa League, there are bound to be some David vs Goliath clashes. On paper at least, this upcoming match between Luxembourg-based Dudelange and AC Milan definitely falls into that category. Milan may not be the premier side they once were back in the day, but certainly the Rossoneri head into this game as heavy favorites. The Rossoner finally ended theirthree-season absence from Europe last campaign by featuring in the Europa League, but saw their campaign end at the round of 16 when they were beaten both home and away by Arsenal.
This time around, they will be hoping to go even further, but they nearly missed out. After finishing sixth in Serie A, financial problems almost saw the Diavolo kicked out of the competition, with their spot given to Fiorentina temporarily. However, Milan were able to get the ban overturned and now that they're back in the fold, Gennaro Gatusso's side will want to take full advantage of being given a life-line and use this competition as a way to help rebuild their reputation on the international stage.
Having seen some changes this summer, with Gonzalo Higuain added up front to give them more firepower, Milan are aiming to go deep in the Europa League and make a serious push for a top four spot in Serie A. However, they are still expected to rotate their squad for this game, with Pepe Reina anticipated to feature in goal instead of Gianluigi Donnarumma while youngster Patrick Cutrone misses out due to injury.
As for their upcoming hosts, Dudelange's fans certainly will be excited at welcoming Milan to town. They may be the underdogs, but have a pretty strong recent home record, with just one loss in their last nine home games and will have the full backing of what is certain to be a passionate home crowd in not just the team - but an entire nation's - first ever Europa League group stage game.
