On Sunday, Barcelona traveled to Sevilla and earned a hard-fought comeback win. The away side conceded first, but goals from Leo Messi and Luis Suarez saw them overcome their 3-1 Champions League loss to Man City.
All was well, right? Not entirely, as questions were raised regarding their Uruguayan forward after he picked up a yellow late in the second half. The reason: that booking means the former Liverpool ace will be suspended for the Blaugrana’s next game – a clash with Malaga after the international break.
Suarez was on four yellow cards heading into the game, meaning one more would have ended in suspension. With El Clasico coming up soon, was the South American playing smart by cleaning his record in order to avoid missing the Real Madrid clash?
He told Canal Plus after the final whistle: “The yellow card was actually a good thing. I start with a clean slate again ahead of games away against Real Sociedad and versus Real Madrid.” Although he didn't admit it, last season's Pichichi winner hinted that his booking was intentional.
Four games remain for the Catalan giants before they host Los Blancos for the first time this season. However, one of those fixtures is a Champions League affair whilst another is a Copa del Rey tie.
Had Suarez not been booked over the weekend, he could have instead been suspended for the trip to Real Sociedad, or – worse – for El Clasico.
