After eighth-place contenders Chievo drew at home on Saturday to Fiorentina, Lazio was hoping to steal their spot by winning their clash this Sunday, and that is exactly what Simone Inzaghi's men accomplished.
Miroslav Klose instantly opened the scoreline in the eighth minute, scoring a right-footed shot past goalkeeper Samir Handanović. The German striker received a through ball by Senad Lulic and chipped it over the keeper to give Lazio the lead in the first half.
Furthermore, the home team was awarded a penalty in the 84th minute due to a foul by Colombian international Jeison Murillo. The defender received his second booking of the night, which resulted in a 10-man team against Lazio. Nonetheless, the Eagles took their golden opportunity to further their lead, as Candreva converted the penalty into a goal, blasting it into the top left corner.
Lazio has extended their position on the Serie A table to eighth place, as the home side delivered a great performance filled with chances against the Black and Blues in order to keep the points at the Stadio Olimpico.
However, things are not looking too great for the visitors, as Lazio has ended Inter’s chances of Champions League football. Roberto Mancini's crew needed a win to keep the pressure on third-place Roma, but all hopes have disappeared after Klose's and Candreva's goals sealed the victory for the hosts.
Lazio (51) currently sits in the eighth spot on the Serie A table, while Inter Milan (64) must now concentrate on securing a Europa League ticket for the upcoming season.
