Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano has turned down a huge deal to join an unnamed Chinese Super League club, as reported by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo. The outlet claims that the Spaniard was offered a deal worth £39 million but he dismissed it and committed his future to the Catalan giants.
The former Liverpool man joined the Spanish giants in 2010 and has since established himself as a regular starter at the back. During his six seasons at the club, he has won three La Liga titles, two Champions Leagues and two Copa del Reys.
In 2014, the 32-year-old was in the verge of leaving the Nou Camp due to lack of adequate playtime, however, he was reportedly convinced by coach Luis Enrique to stay and has since established himself alongside Gerard Pique at the Barca’s backline.
Mascherano has a deal with Barca that ends in 2018. Several media reports suggest that he could return to Argentina to play for his former club River Plate before retiring from football.
