It’s official; Belgium’s friendly match with Portugal in preparation for the upcoming Euro 2016 is canceled as the country enters national mourning in the wake of Tuesday’s attack in the capital.
A series of explosion were set off in Brussels on Tuesday at the Zaventem airport and a nearby metro station, killing at least 34 and leaving 250 wounded as per the BBC.
The national side, having booked their ticket to the highly-anticipated continental tournament being held in France this summer, were scheduled to face Cristiano and Co. next Tuesday at the King Baudouin Stadium in the capital.
The Red Devils, however, announced that the game will be called off “for security reasons and precaution” upon request from the city, as stated in the Belgian FA’s official website.
Similarly, the national outfit called off practice sessions on Tuesday – the day of the attack – and Wednesday.
Several member of the Belgium team – led by captain Vincent Kompany, Kevin de Bruyne, and Marouane Fellaini – took to Twitter to pay tribute to the victims and condemn the heinous act of violence.
Premier League giants Everton have also revealed that star striker Romelu Lukaku, a central figure for Marc Wilmots’ crew, will return to England after the cancelation of next Tuesday’s friendly.
