Lionel Messi was on the brink of signing for Real Madrid, not once, twice, but thrice!

Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi and Real Madrid held secret talks over a shock transfer to the Santiago Bernabeu, according to Cadena Cope. As ridiculous as it sounds, the Argentine held talks with representatives from Los Blancos over a stunning record-breaking deal to join their arch rivals. In what would be one of the most famous transfers in the history of La Liga since Luis Figo’s switch from the Nou Camp to the Santiago Bernabeu, Messi simply needed to sign the paperwork to finalize the deal.

The Spanish radio station reported:

“The first attempt from Real Madrid to sign Messi happened in the summer of 2011. At Madrid they feared that Cristiano Ronaldo would leave the club for a huge offer from Manchester City, and that was when they put into motion the work to replace him with another star.’’

“Real Madrid used an intermediary to arrange this meeting who wasn’t a club employee but was someone very close to Florentino Perez. The response was rapid and clear: ''Thanks for the interest, but Leo isn’t moving.''

The second attempt to lure the 28-year-old to the Santiago Bernabeu was back in the summer of 2013 when Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at the club was in doubt. Additionally, within the same period of time, Neymar Jr had refused to join the Spanish giants and chose the Blaugrana. However, when Los Blancos approached the Argentina captain as Ronaldo’s immediate replacement, he rejected the offer.

Real Madrid then allegedly came knocking at the doors of the Barcelona legend in 2014, but for the third time in a row, he was not interested.

Whether the reports are true or not, one cannot simply dispute the fact that Messi has been a top transfer target of some of Europe’s richest clubs, most recently Manchester City. The English giants were reportedly willing to give him a £800,000 a week salary to land his signature, something that he turned down. By rejecting such a record-breaking offer that would make him the highest-paid footballer in the world, it becomes quite easier to believe that he actually turned down Real Madrid’s goodies.
