Has sex tape blackmailing become the new trend in football?
Reports coming out of Spain claim the Barcelona defender Gerard Pique is the latest star in football to have fallen victim to sex tape blackmailing, with claims that he and superstar wife Shakira are being extorted for money.
This is according to Diario Vasco, who write that it is a former employee of the couple who is demanding a “large sum of money” in exchange for not releasing the alleged intimate footage.
Things could get ugly for Pique and Shakira, who have been an item since meeting in 2010 in the shooting of the Colombian sensation’s “Waka Waka” music video, given that they have two kids, two-year-old Milan and 11-month old Sasha.
AS claims that the couple are refusing to comment on the story. The Mirror, however, reports that a source close to the 28-year-old Blaugrana center-back has revealed that “this is a very random report and completely untrue".
This is the second high-profile sex tape blackmailing to hit Spain involving a player of one of the country’s top-flight side.
In the beginning of November, Real Madrid ace Karim Benzema was arrested and questioned for allegedly being complicit in a plot to blackmail France team-mate Mathieu Valbeuna.
The Blancos forward was later charged for his believed role in the plot to extort £40,000 to £75,000 from the Lyon playmaker.
Benzema, if found guilty, could spend between 5 to 7 years in jail.
These two incidents could prove distracting for both Pique and Benzema when the two take stage in El Clasico, on Saturday, though there are reports that the Real Madrid striker could miss the Barcelona clash with injury.
