It has been an incredible past few days for Juventus and their fans. La Vecchia Signora are in their first Champions League final for 12 years after grinding out a 3-2 aggregate win over tournament favourites Real Madrid. But, with the eagerly anticipated event against Barcelona a few weeks away, Massimiliano Allegri's men, who have already secured their fourth straight Scudetto, will now have to turn their attention back to domestic affairs as they take on bitter rivals Inter at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.
Any clash between Inter and Juve is always an eagerly anticipated affair for Serie A fans, due to the contentious history between the Nerazzurri and the Bianconeri, in a derby described as the "Derby d'Italia" (Derby of Italy). With part one of their Treble secured, the visitors will also have one eye on their Coppa Italia final with Lazio just a few days later - and Roberto Mancini's men will hope this will prove to be a distraction as they welcome the league champions to Milan.
La Beneamata have appeared to have finally turned a positive corner as they are now on a seven-match unbeaten run (four wins, three draws). As a result, the hosts are now within touching distance of a Europa League spot with just three rounds remaining:
Close race: Inter, Genoa, Fiorentina, and Sampdoria are all within contention for Europa League football next season
Despite his team's uptick in form, Mancini is under no illusions that Inter will have it easy against Juventus:
.@robymancio: "#InterJuventus sarà difficile perché comunque quando si arriva in finale c'è entusiasmo, chi giocherà darà il massimo"
— F.C. Internazionale (@Inter) May 15, 2015
"Inter vs. Juventus will be difficult because when you arrive at the end of the season there is a lot of enthusiasm [to win]. Whoever plays will give their best."
However, the former Manchester City tactician was still full of praise for his team:
.@robymancio: "La squadra è migliorata ed è diventata una squadra. Abbiamo ancora lacune da migliorare" #InterJuventus
— F.C. Internazionale (@Inter) May 15, 2015
"The squad has improved and has really become a team. But we still have space to improve."
Mancini will have to do without Fredy Guarin, whose season is over after the Colombian suffered a hamstring injury, and Yuto Nagatomo could be called in to deputise for him in midfield. New signings Xherdan Shaqiri and Lukas Podolski, who were on the bench in the team's 2-1 win over Lazio may also get to feature from the start.
Meanwhile, Allegri, following his team's great performance in Madrid, will opt to give quite a few stars a well-deserved break and rotate his starting XI:
.@OfficialAllegri: "Domani rimangono a casa Tevez, Pirlo, Buffon, Evra e Vidal" #InterJuve
— JuventusFC (@juventusfc) May 15, 2015
"Tomorrow, Tevez, Pirlo, Buffon, Evra, and Vidal will stay at home"
.@OfficialAllegri: "Tomorrow I'll have the opportunity to hand game time to those who have played less, @Asabob20 for example." #InterJuve
— JuventusFC (@juventusfcen) May 15, 2015
Still, despite having already won the Scudetto, he expects his team to put in a good shift:
.@OfficialAllegri: "Domani è pur sempre #InterJuve, e loro si stanno giocando l'#UEL. Dovremo giocare una bella partita a San Siro"
— JuventusFC (@juventusfc) May 15, 2015
"Tomorrow is [all about] Inter and they are playing for a Europa League spot. We need to play a good game at the San Siro"
Tevez, whose 20 goals put him in the running for this season's Capocannoniere award, will definitely hope that neither Inter's Mauro Icardi nor Verona's Luca Toni manage to score, as they are just two and one behind in the rankings.
Today's meeting between Inter and Juventus will be the 164th between the two sides, with the visitors enjoying 77 wins versus the hosts' 45. Like most of Italy's sides, the Nerazzurri will probably have it tough against the Bianconeri, as not only have they lost five out of their last nine games (with just one win) but they have not been able to score more than one goal in their last four league clashes.
