Bayer 04 Leverkusen's erratic form in the Bundesliga continued as they surrendered a lead against Augsburg in the final seconds of stoppage time to draw 2-2. The result was more disheartening considering their previous game against second placed Wolfsburg at the Bay Arena. In an incredible match, Wolfsburg had taken a 0-3 lead; Leverkusen had fought back to 2-3 only to be pegged back by a Bas Dost strike. Yet, Roger Schmidt's side had leveled matters at 4-4. They conceded another goal in the final seconds of stoppage time to lose 4-5. These two defeats came after Werder Bremen had defeated them as well.
Leverkusen will be playing against a side that has lost just one of its past four matches; Atletico Madrid will be coming into this game, looking to make yet another run to the UEFA Champions League Final. They recently tore apart their local rivals, Real Madrid, 4-0. Atletico's players are in red hot form; Mario Mandzukic, an opponent all too familiar to Leverkusen, will be looking to take advantage of any gaps at the back. Antoine Griezmann will have to be accounted for by Bayer 04 too. Leverkusen, unfortunately, have too many holes to plug in defense at the moment.
Robbie Kruse is out while Omer Toprak is suspended for the home side. Lars Bender and Tin Jedvaj are both doubtful. Bender's absence is one which might allow Atletico to stretch Leverkusen just enough to break them. Jedvaj, young and adventurous, is also a much needed presence on the wings. As for Atletico, Koke and Tiago are doubtful for the trip to Germany.
