Canada are ranked 120th in the FIFA World Rankings. Los Cafeteros, meanwhile, are world football’s third best nation. Tuesday night’s international friendly match against Colombia appears as an amazing opportunity for the Canucks to enjoy a bit of limelight.
Key player Rickett was quoted as saying:
“It’s always great to play the best teams out there, and I think it’s a good test for us, to show our growth and basically where we stand on the international stage.”
Young players will have to wait for a chance to impress coach Benito Floro. He was quick to set Canada’s priority right, ahead of the game.
“We called up Olympic (under-23) players because we need to form a new base according to our system of play in the first team,” Floro explained.
“And besides if we need during the game three or four of them, we are going to put the players on the pitch because they are capable enough to know the attacking and defensive moves.
“But we are focusing on the first lineup, the first team, because we need to maintain our level of rhythm,” he added, referring to the Canadians’ morale-boosting 3-1 win over Jamaica in September.
A lot has changed since Canada last faced Colombia. That was 14 years ago in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final. The former triumphed 2-0. Now Floro is excited about clashing with the South American side again.
“We know that Colombia is a very good team,” he said.
“They play a modern game, action, defensive, they know how to pace. The quality is very good. So that is a very good test because we need to realize if we are improving our level.”
