History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Copa Libertadores Sub-20, or U-20 Copa Libertadores in English, is the top club competition for youth teams in South America. It is hosted by CONMEBOL and had its first edition in 2011, created to boost young footballers from South American countries. The first two editions were held in Peru, but subsequent tournaments were held in different CONMEBOL countries after a brief pause between 2012 and 2015.
Over the years, the tournament has been played mostly by 12 teams, with the only exception coming in 2012 when sixteen clubs participated. The U-20 champion from every CONMEBOL country, an extra team from the host nation and the defending champions complete the draw, which divides all teams into three groups of four. After a round-robin between all group members, the winner of each group and the best second place enter the final stage, where single-leg ties are played to determine the finalists. If any games end in a draw, penalties are used to name a winner.
Throughout its history, the competition has seen many teams being crowned as champions. Clubs such as River Plate, Boca Juniors, Nacional, Sao Paulo, and Independiente del Valle have been able to take the title home.
