About Primera División
Primera División History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Primera División de Venezuela is the top-tier football category in the South American country. The competition was first played in 1921, but it became a professional league until 1957. This tournament is supervised by the Football Federation of Venezuela.
Over the years, the Primera División has been played under a promotion-relegation system. As it happens with many South American leagues, the competition starts every calendar year, with all teams facing each other twice during the regular season. Once that stage is over, the four best teams make it to the final round, where they play each other two more times before the top clubs reach the final match, which is played at a neutral venue. The tiebreakers for that match include extra time and penalties in the event of a draw after 90 minutes. Meanwhile, the two teams with the worst record in a calendar year are relegated to the Segunda División.
Added to the title, the Primera División offers several chances to play continental tournaments. Those teams that make the final four enter different stages of the Copa Libertadores, while those who are ranked between 5th and eighth place enter the Copa Sudamericana.
Coverage of this competition has been handed to local networks Venevisión, Meridiano TV, and TVEs. In the United States, GolTV acquired TV and streaming rights to include the Primera División in its regular programming until 2024.
