About Prva Liga
Prva Liga History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Serbian First League, also referred to as the PLS or PrvaLiga, is the second tier in Serbia's professional football league. It was founded in 2005 and is run by the Football Association of Serbia.
The first division league has 16 teams competing in it and operates on the promotion and relegation system. Each club plays 30 matches in a season (15 at home and 15 away). A win attracts three points while a point is awarded for a draw. At the end of the season, the team with the most points is crowned the league winner.
The champions and the first runners-up earn automatic promotion to the Serbian SuperLiga. The final promotion slot is contested between the winner of the third to sixth place playoffs and the 14th-placed team of the SuperLiga.
Relatively, the four bottom-placed teams are relegated to the Serbian League. Four more teams from the second division league are then promoted to fill the void in the PrvaLiga.
Clubs in the PrvaLiga are eligible to feature in the Serbian Cup - the top-flight domestic cup competition in the country.
