AFC U-16 Championship History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The AFC U-16 Championship is a biennial Asian cup competition held for the continent’s under-16 national teams. Founded in 1985, it was initially an under-17 tournament but that all changed in 2006. A total of 16 teams participate in this competition, with the contestants being split into four groups of four in a single round-robin format. Similarly, the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final are one-off matches. This tournament acts as Asia’s qualifiers for the FIFA U-17 World Cup, with the top four countries from the AFC U-16 Championship earning tickets to the under-17 FIFA competition.
