About FA Women's Community Shield
FA Women's Community Shield History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Women’s FA Community Shield was an annual English football competition between the FA Women's Premier League champion (later renamed the FA Women's Super League in 2020) and the Women’s FA Cup winner. This super cup fixture, the women's equivalent of the men’s FA Community Shield, was founded in 2000 and lasted until 2008, with a revival in 2020 before being cancelled again.
The first two editions were known as the FA Charity Shield until the name changed in 2002. As with the men's version and most European domestic football super cups, the competition consisted of a single-leg match.
The inaugural Women’s FA Community Shield ended in a draw, with Charlton Athletic and Arsenal sharing the trophy after a 1-1 stalemate—the only instance of title-sharing. Only one other Women’s FA Community Shield tie ended in a draw, which was Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Fulham in 2002. This match-up was decided on penalties, with Fulham emerging victorious.
Arsenal is the most successful club in this competition, having won the Women’s FA Community Shield five times (2000, 2001, 2005, 2006, and 2008). Charlton Athletic and Fulham are the only other clubs with multiple victories, each claiming the title twice.
While the Men's FA Community Shield is traditionally held at Wembley Stadium, only one Women’s FA Community Shield occurred at this iconic venue. That was the 2020 match between Chelsea and Manchester City, which the London side won 2-0.
