About Copa do Brasil

The Copa do Brasil is a knockout tournament played by all teams in the regional or professional football system in Brazil. The competition hosts up to 80 Brazilian clubs and offers entry to next year’s Copa Libertadores, along with seven berths to play in the ongoing Copa Sudamericana.

Teams can play up to eight rounds to reach the final. The first two of those include regional teams and are played as a one-match tie. Two-legged ties are implemented from the third round to the end of the competition, with the aggregate score being the only tiebreaker.

The first four rounds will hand five spots for the final stage of the competition. There, those five teams will meet eleven pre-selected teams, which will be drawn by a coefficient system created by the Brazilian Football Confederation.

The 2019 edition of the Copa do Brasil had a record-breaking 91 teams fighting for the title. The tournament started on February 6, 2019 and saw Athletico Paranaense claiming the title. The road to the final was full of problems for the red and black side, as they had to beat Fortaleza in the Round of 16, then they required a penalty shootout to get rid of Flamengo in the Quarterfinals. The semi-finals ended with Parananense’s win over 5-time champions Gremio, and the title showdown saw the Furacao defeat Internacional at Beira-Rio Stadium on September 18, 2019.

Despite winning the 2019 edition of this tournament, Athletico Paranaense is nowhere near those who have won more titles in this competition. That honor belongs to Cruzeiro, a team that has won six Copa do Brasil titles. Gremio is the second most winning team in this tournament, with five titles to their name.

Did you know? Legendary striker Romario is the most prolific scorer in this tournament, having scored 36 goals in 45 matches.
