About First League

First League History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Belarusian First League is the second highest level of professional football in Belarus. It was founded in 1992, and generally is structured around a double-round robin format in which each team plays each other twice. While the size of the Belarusian First League has fluctuated in the years since its inception, the league generally has had around 16 teams, expanding to 17 for the 2023/24 season.

Like many other leagues around the world, the Belarusian First League operates on a relegation-promotion format. In general, the two best teams from the Belarusian First League secure promotion to the Belarusian Premier League, while the two worst performing teams in the Belarusian First League are demoted to the Belarusian Second League (the third tier).

No one team has really dominated the landscape since the birth of the Belarusian Premier League, making the title race each season that much more intriguing for fans of that league. Some teams, such as Minsk and Lokomotiv Minsk, did enjoy some period of success during the 2000s.

Since the start of the 21st century, media rights to the Belarusian First League in Belarus were first held by public TV broadcasters, namely Belsat TV. However, this eventually started to shift to paid-TV providers in the latter part of the 2010s, when Baltcom TV acquired TV and live-streaming rights in a multi-year deal.
