About
TV3 Norway History, Coverage, Features
TV3 is a Norwegian television channel owned by the Modern Times Group and operated by Viasat. The channel was launched on September 30, 1990 and has its headquarters located in the United Kingdom to work around the strict advertising laws that have operated in Norway for television channels. During its earlier years, TV3 was not available on the Norwegian terrestrial network until 2007, when the digital TV terrestrial system was introduced in the country.
Over the years, TV3 has been known as a general entertainment channel, with TV series, movies, sitcoms, and sports being aired on this channel. While the channel has included in-house productions, the most popular shows aired by the network have been imported from the United States.
Speaking about sports, TV3 has focused its coverage on disciplines such as football, motorsports, boxing, sailing, and handball. At one point in history, TV3 held broadcasting rights to some of the top football tournaments in the world, such as the Italian Serie A, the Danish Superliga, and the UEFA Champions League. Added to that, the channel also aired away friendly games for the Norwegian National Football team, but those rights were handed over to one of the network’s sister channels.
TV3 was launched as a Standard Definition channel, but a High-Definition feed was developed and launched in 2011. Users may still be able to watch the channel if they do not have access to HD technology via a downscaled version of the network.
