La Sexta History, Coverage, Features

La Sexta is a Spanish free-to-air channel owned and operated by Atresmedia. It was launched on April 1, 2001 as Beca TV, but the channel only lasted for two years, as its signal was shut down for its poor ratings. La Sexta took its place on the grid on November 25, 2005 as a test signal, and it was later launched officially on March 27, 2006.

Over the years, La Sexta has aimed its content to male audiences, with most of their programming having something to do with news, entertainment, and humor. Some of the most popular shows emitted by this channel include in-house productions, but TV series produced by other channels, such as Game of Thrones, have earned high rating numbers to the network.

Speaking about sports, La Sexta has focused its content on disciplines such as tennis, football, basketball, motor sports, and more. Nevertheless, some of those disciplines have been left out of its schedule since the channel merged with Antena 3. Over the years, La Sexta has owned broadcasting rights for La Liga, for the FIFA World Cup, Eurobasket tournament, the FIBA World Championship and for Formula 1 seasons. Other competitions aired by this channel over time include the Spanish Copa del Rey and Liga Adelante matches.

La Sexta started out airing its content in Standard Definition format, but the channel improved the audience’s viewing experience by airing its first HD program, an Eurobasket match between Spain and the United States. The channel’s HD feed was officially launched on November 1, 2010. Most of the shows that are emitted by this network are aired under this format, but a downscaled HD feed is available for users that do not have access to an HD broadcast.
