About
ESPN Brazil history, coverage, features
ESPN Brasil is the Brazilian sister channel for ESPN. It is owned by the Walt Disney Company and by Hearst Communications, who launched the channel in 1995. ESPN Brasil became the first country-specific version of this channel. The Brazilian version of the U.S-based network has operated four channels (ESPN Brasil, ESPN, ESPN 2, and ESPN Extra), and one streaming service comprising all of their TV feeds.
Just like its American counterpart, ESPN Brasil specializes in sports coverage. The network has covered various disciplines over the years, which have included football, action sports, baseball, basketball, boxing college sports, cricket, cycling, esports, futsal, golf, American football, handball, horse racing, ice hockey, marathon, mixed martial arts, motorsports, poker, rugby, surf, tennis, volleyball, and yachting.
Each of the channels operated by ESPN in Brasil is dedicated to a specific discipline. In ESPN Brasil’s case, the focus of the channel has been to air football-related competitions, both national and international. Some of the disciplines covered by this channel have included leagues such as the English Premier League, La Liga, the Primeira Liga, the Eredivisie, the Chinese Super League, the American Major League Soccer, and Mexico’s Liga de Expansión. Curiously, ESPN Brasil has not aired many domestic competitions throughout its history, other than some Copa do Brasil editions
ESPN Brasil’s football coverage has also extended to international tournaments such as the UEFA Women’s Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, and friendly competitions such as the Audi Cup, the Premier League Asia Trophy, the Emirates Cup, and the Joan Gamper Trophy.
National Team football has also been aired on ESPN Brasil frequently, with FIFA World Cup Qualifying matches for the African Football Confederation and CONCACAF being featured. Moreover, ESPN Brasil has also covered different editions of the FIFA World Cup, including the one held in Brazil.
ESPN Brasil started as a SD channel back in the day. Nevertheless, an HD feed of this channel was made available for users since March 2011. A downscaled version of this feed is available for users who are not able to watch the HD feed.
