BBC Four History, Coverage, Features
BBC Four is a free-to-air television channel owned by the BBC. The channel was launched on March 2, 2002 and is considered as an alternative to the shows aired by all mainstream TV channels.
Throughout its history, BBC Four has aired different shows such as documentaries, international films, drama shows, comedy shows, and current affairs shows. BBC Four is seen as the vessel to show the United Kingdom’s range in music, international arts, and culture.
Speaking about sports, BBC Four was also in charge of airing some games of the 2016 UEFA European Championship, while also adding live action events for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
BBC Four is also the curator of the BBC Archive project, whose goal is to air most of the network’s previously broadcast footage rather than keeping it isolated.
The channel’s original feed was aired in Standard Definition (SD), but a High-Definition feed was introduced on December 13, 2013. This new feed is available in most of the UK, but pay-tv carriers could opt to offer both formats.
