Preview: Can Peru complete the double over Venezuela?
Spectators at the Estadio Jose Antonio Anzoategui in Puerto La Cruz can anticipate a great encounter on Tuesday night. Both teams are in a fierce five-team contest to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup as Argentina, Colombia and Chile have already guaranteed themselves of a Top Five finish.
La Vinotinto has lost two of its six home games in the South American World Cup qualifiers and will be keen to avenge the 2-1 defeat suffered away to Peru in September last year. The hosts will need to take advantage of the Peruvians’ horrible away record.
Indeed, the latter are yet to win outside Lima. They have grabbed only one point from a possible 18 away from home, conceding as many as 14 goals in the process (seven times the amount of goals Venezuela have allowed on home soil).
Last Friday, both teams lost their respective World Cup qualifier. However, circumstances were very much different. The Venezuelans only had themselves to blame after succumbing to a 3-0 loss against Chile in Santiago.
On the contrary, the Peruvians’ defeat against Uruguay was mainly the result of controversial decisions. Referee Patricio Loustau awarded a dubious penalty to goal scorer Luis Suarez before reducing the hosts to 10 men with the harsh dismissal of defender Yoshimar Yotun. The game ended 2-1 with Suarez hitting a brace.
And what if what happened against La Celeste Olimpica was a blessing in disguise? Could it serve as enough motivation for Peru to clinch their first away win in the South American World Cup qualifiers?
