The Gunners are without a victory in their last five EPL games. Will they return to winning ways against the Saints? Here is our preview of Wednesday’s Emirates Stadium showdown.

Preview – Arsenal vs Southampton

Arsenal return to action in the English Premier League after their weekend disappointment against Burnley and will strive for nothing but returning to winning ways. Unfortunately, they will be facing an in-form Southampton side that have lost only once in their last 10 domestic games. This game will take place at the Emirates Stadium, making it all the more trickier for the Gunners given their dreadful home form.

The north London giants head into this fixture on the back of their 1-0 defeat to Burnley and as was said about that game, their upcoming clash with the Saints is a must-win fixture. Unfortunately, there is little to suggest Arsenal will turn their fortunes around, with Aubameyang and Co. losing three in a row and being winless from their last five.

In fact, Arteta’s men have won only twice in their last 10 league games, a run of results many are already dubbing relegation form. This has resulted in large portions of the fan base turning on the Spanish tactician, a once popular and promising figure, with calls for his sacking increasing by the day. However, the board is nowhere near ready to axe Pep’s former assistance.

Speaking to the media, technical director Edu pledged the club’s backing and support to Mikel, stating that they are planning for the future, with Arteta being at the heart of it. Regardless, the Spaniard must focus on winning games first before planning for the future.

Can they beat Southampton, however? The Saints are fourth in the table, sitting 10 points ahead of the home side. The Gunners are in 15th, sitting only five points above the relegation zone. Due to the suspension of Xhaka and Bellerin, Arteta will be forced to alter his lineup. Only time will tell if that will bring an end to their misery.

Team news

Arsenal: Granit Xhaka is suspended after picking up a red card in the defeat to Burnley and will begin his three-game ban with Wednesday’s fixture. Additionally, Bellerin is out after racking up five yellow cards but Nicolas Pepe is back and available to start – whether he will make the lineup is under doubt, however. David Luiz will undergo a late test to determine his availability while the likes of Partey and Martinelli unlikely to feature.

Southampton: Danny Ings is back and firing at full speed, which will be a concern for Arsenal’s defense. As a result, the Saints have a full-fit squad to choose from.
