Robin Dutt praised his team for fighting in a match they lost 3-0. Seemingly, he might have feared that Bayern might do to his side what they did to his former side, Freiburg, when they went up by two goals in twenty minutes.
Schalke’s Ralf Rangnick stepped down earlier in the week. He wasn’t up to coaching for the entire season. The pressure had got to him. He needed a break. He wished Schalke the best for the rest of the season. Under Seppo Eickhorn, the deputy, Schalke beat Freiburg 4-2, coming back from 0-1 down. Recent rumours suggest that Huub Stevens will take over the club.

Hamburg sacked Michael Oenning earlier in the week. Under the tutelage of deputy Rodolfo Cardoso, they beat Stuttgart 1-2, coming back from 1-0 down. Both the goals were classy. Robert Tesche’s winner was one Hamburg fans won’t forget soon. Hamburg will seemingly appoint Marco Van Basten or Louis Van Gaal in recent weeks according to recent rumours.

When Thomas Mueller scored in the fifth minute following an amazing pass by Franck Ribery, Leverkusen fans must have known that the game was over even before it started. Bayer 04 then allowed Daniel Van Buyten to blast one in from 25 yards out from a free-kick. 2-0; the match was over. Leverkusen, to their credit, continued fighting but was not helped by the absences of Andre Schürrle and Michal Kadlec through suspension and that of Michael Ballack due to illness.

One of the German newspapers, Suddeutsche Zeitung, stated that Leverkusen had little to do after twenty minutes and as a result managed to conserve a lot of energy for playing a must-win match against Genk in midweek. Leverkusen, let’s not forget, was the runner-up last season. They finished ahead of Bayern.

The team that took the Bundesliga by storm finally got three points out of a match they dominated. Also, fans must have been happy to see Lucas Barrios return to the pitch. Dortmund’s clumsy defending saw Mainz take the lead. Dortmund crawled back through the intelligent Ivan Perisic and took all three points in injury time when Lukasz Piszczek hit from all the way outside the box.

Dortmund needs to take full points against Marseille in midweek. One of the sides that Dortmund hammered last season, Kaiserslautern is having a terrible season. They posted up yet another loss against Wolfsburg. Köln, surprisingly, took all three points against a very tough Hoffenheim side.

The final match of the weekend might have left a few Hertha fans in tatters. The score was 1-1 against Bremen. The match was taking place at the Weser Stadium. Hertha was down to nine men after having two players sent off in the space of four minutes. They held on for about half an hour and even launched attacks of their own.

Deep into injury time, Claudio Pizarro’s header left them with no points. Markus Babbel was proud of his side for fighting and did not really have negative things to say. Bremen sits second ahead of Mönchengladbach in third. Gladbach registered a win over Nuremberg. After fighting for relegation for most of the previous season, third spot in the table doesn’t seem to be a bad position to be in. They are only two points behind the Bavarians they beat on Match-day One.

Next week, Hoffenheim will have a shot at taking down Bayern. If Bayern beat Manchester City, the afternoon could turn out to be a long one for the Hoff.
