For many, the Supercopa de España between Real Madrid and Barcelona will strongly benefit the winning side. For the Argentine defender though, it is a bit different.
The two Spanish giants have not met in the Spanish Super Cup contest since 1997. Fans however had too much to enjoy earlier this year as the clubs clashed on four occasions in La Liga, the Copa del Rey final, and the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

Barcelona lost a single encounter in the unforgettable Clasico series, but their defeat was a highly meaningful one for Real Madrid, who eventually broke their cupless curse. Although momentum would play a big role in the campaign of the side that comes out victorious on aggregate on August 17, Mascherano believes the details emerging in the upcoming season will have much greater effects on the end results of both rivals’ terms.

“(The Super Cup’s result) won’t be a big influence on the rest of the season, even though a victory will give whoever takes wins a boost,” he declared in his latest press conference.

The defender was part of the Argentina squad that competed in the 2011 Copa America. He returned from his break on Monday earlier this week, and could have a place reserved in Pep Guardiola’s line-up against Real Madrid.
