Later this evening, Norwich City will welcome Chelsea to Carrow Road, and each side will have different objectives on their minds, but one in common: to pick up all three points. For the hosts, who sit in 17th spot and are only out of the drop zone on goal difference, each and every single point earned between now and the conclusion season will make the difference between survival and relegation. And for the visitors, who endured a torrid start to this campaign, another win could further lift their spirits and see them move into the top half of the table for the first time since August.
Norwich City
Having picked up just one point from their past seven games - the worst run of any side currently competing in the Premier League - Alex Neal's side will be coming into this game having suffered a heartbreaking loss to current league leaders Leicester City. The Canaries, who have conceded a whopping 21 goals in their last seven matches across all competitions, thought that they had secured a point against the Foxes, only to be undone by a late goal from Leonardo Ulloa.
Although Norwich have a relatively "easy" run of fixtures after this one against Chelsea, they still nonetheless have shipped 51 goals in just 27 matches thus far, and are tied with fellow relegation candidates Sunderland for the poorest defensive record in the top flight.
Certainly, Neal will be counting on new signing Steven Naismith to not just lead the line, but continue his trend of scoring against the Blues. The Scotland international put Chelsea to the sword whilst featuring for Everton earlier this season, netting a hat-trick to bring his total to six goals in seven appearances against the London giants.
In terms of personnel, the hosts will be without the services of Andre Wisdom due to a knee problem, whilst Sebastien Bassong and Wes Hoolahan will have to pass a late fitness test to determine their availability for today's fixture.
Chelsea
Under Guus Hiddink, Chelsea are still unbeaten in the league, and finally strung together back-to-back wins for the first time all season when they beat Southampton this past weekend. Nonetheless, the reigning Premier League champions are still in the bottom half of the table. They will keen on picking up another three points as they hope to finish the season on a much better note than they started and given their good record against Norwich, the Blues will have an excellent chance to achieve this later today.
Due to their upcoming fixture list, the Dutch tactician could opt to make some squad rotations for this game. Captain John Terry is still out, as is young French defender Kurt Zouma, and former Barcelona star Pedro has now been added to the injury list after having to be subbed off early on against Southampton.
Given that Diego Costa is the team's only reliable out-and-out striker, he will likely start the match but likely could be replaced by another Brazilian at some point during the fixture, as per Hiddink in his recent press conference:
Chelsea have won seven out of their past nine meetings against Norwich, including the reverse fixture from earlier this season. The last time that the Canaries were able to pick up all three points against the Blues was over two decades ago, in December 1994 when they defeated them 3-0 at the very same ground they will met on later today: Carrow Road.
