Roy Hodgson and his men are in a good position. Despite not impressing in terms of play, England have managed to pick maximum points so far and they are yet to concede.
A 2-0 win over Switzerland and a 5-0 demolition of San Marino means that the Three Lions enter Sunday’s clash as Group E leaders with 6 points and a (+7) goal difference. The Estonians, meanwhile, remain third in the standings with 3 points like Slovenia, after losing 1-0 to Lithuania on Thursday.
Speaking to the press ahead of the encounter, Hodgson explained:
“I would be a bit wary of putting Estonia in the same category as San Marino. They might surprise people who haven't seen a lot of them.”
In midweek, Slovakia and Slovenia stunned Spain and Switzerland respectively. Ruling out complacency, Hodgson added:
“They [Estonia] are very Scandinavian in their approach, and you know how good the Swedes, Norwegians and Danes have been in terms of work ethic and organisation.
“It will be a bit of a test, but I'm very confident we'll see it through.”
Both teams first met in 2007 with David Beckham stealing the show as Joe Cole, Peter Crouch and Michael Owen all found the net. The return leg of this Euro 2008 qualifying tie saw England win 3-0 again. The hosts will be hoping to avoid losing for the third consecutive time against the Three Lions, this time around.
