The Red Devils will need to register all three points to climb back into the top four following Arsenal's win over Leicester City on Tuesday. Man United endured a frustrating outing against West Ham last time out, a match they nearly lost but were rescued by a late strike from Daley Blind. Despite of not being at their level best in recent games, the Red Devils are unbeaten in their last five matches and will be hoping to extend their run when they face relegation favourites Burnley.
Spanish international Juan Mata has labelled the upcoming tie as a must win as United aim to return to Champions League football by securing a place in the top four.
"We play at home against Burnley and we must win this one because the race for the Champions League spots is now very close. We have to get the three points at home, we know that, and that's what we are working for," he wrote in his blog.
Mata also had words of praise for compatriot David De Gea who made a string of fine saves to keep his side in the tie.
"We saw all the good work that West Ham are doing this season, and they were a threat to David several times. They are always tough to beat at home, and their position in the table [eighth] is well deserved."
Burnley like United suffered a disappointing outing during their weekend fixture after conceding a 2-0 lead against West Brom at Turf Moor.
Burnley now face difficult times ahead as they face sides in the top nine in their eight subsequent fixtures but manager Sean Dyche is confident his team can produce good results during the period.
"We know the journey we're on," he told the media. "We know what it takes and it's another reminder of it.
"Onwards and upwards for us; that's the way we look at it. That's the clarity we need for the players and that's the clarity we ensure they've got."
Stephen Ward is back in training for Burnley however Matt Taylor has suffered a setback during his recovery from an Achilles problem. Midfielder Dean Marney also suffered an injury last time out and is unlikely to feature against Man United.
Van Gaal will be without the services of Luke Shaw who will serve suspension as a result of his red card against West Ham. Michael Carrick on the other hand will remain on the side lines.
