The Bundesliga kicks off on Friday with a clash between its top two teams. Wolfsburg sits 11 points behind Bayern after two draws in their previous three Bundesliga matches. Wolfsburg, following their 2009 Bundesliga triumph, were expected to hold on to their status as regular title challengers considering their financial backing from Volkswagen; however, they have been disappointing in recent seasons. This is the first season since 2009 in which Wolfsburg is truly making noise.
These two sides met on the opening day of this season; Bayern ran out as 2-1 winners thanks to goals from Arjen Robben and Thomas Müller. Ivica Olic scored a spectacular goal that day but it was not enough for Wolfsburg to salvage a point. The late Junior Malanda missed a chance to equalize after doing all the hard work needed to score. As far as Bayern is concerned, they have had a great training camp and returned to Bavaria. They thrashed Bochum in a recent friendly and seem all but prepared to restart the title challenge. The Bavarian machine has won six of its previous six Bundesliga matches. Also, Bayern will have their sights set on winning back the UEFA Champions League from Real Madrid. Pep Guardiola will welcome back Holger Badstuber, the hugely unlucky defender, for this one.
