About Campeonato Cearense 1

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Campeonato Cearense 1 is the top-flight league of Ceará, a Brazilian state situated in the northwestern region of the country. This championship was founded in 1915, with Ceará Sporting Club (Ceará) winning the first five titles in a row before Fortaleza brought an end to this run in 1920, embarking on their own eight-year dominance until 1928 in which they won all but two of the nine trophies.

The format of the competition has changed throughout the years, even the number of participants. The champions are awarded a spot in the Copa do Brasil while the worst performers get relegated to the Campeonato Cearense Série B, the region’s second-division league.
