About Serie B
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Campeonato Brasileiro Serie B, or simply known as Brasileirao Serie B, is the second most relevant club competition in Brazil’s football system. Although it was created in 1971, the competition was not held every year until 2006, when the league’s format was established to give consistency to all teams involved in the tournament.
The Brazilian Serie B works closely with Brazil’s Serie A (or Brasileirao) under a promotion-relegation system. Each year, all twenty teams from this league face each other twice, with the top clubs in the tournament earning promotion to next year’s Brasileirao. On the other hand, the four least successful clubs are relegated to Serie C.
Even if Serie B is a lower-tier league, the competition has been known over the years for hosting some of the top Brazilian clubs who have been forced to rebuild due to a relegation. Some illustrious guests in this league have included Palmeiras, Botafogo, Cruzeiro, Corinthians, or Atlético Chapecoense. Over thirty different teams have been crowned as Serie B champions since the league’s inception in 1971.
Serie B games are quite on demand all over Brazil and the world. Brazilian networks Band and SporTV have handled coverage of this competition in recent years, while supporters in the United States may get hold of this competition via streaming services such as Fanatiz.
