2013/14 Champions League semis biggest prospects
Atleti-Chelsea: The key battle on the pitch will be between starlet Thibaut Courtois and experienced goalkeeper Petr Cech. Atleti are seen as underdogs but the legend says that “whoever beats Barcelona goes on to win the cup.” Meanwhile, three-time Champions League winner Jose Mourinho is determined to conquer Europe on his Little Blue Horse. The tactical duel between the Special One and the Rojiblancos’ beloved manager, Diego Simeone, should be classic.
Real Madrid-Bayern: The sharpness of Iker Casillas, the fitness of Cristiano Ronaldo and the influence of €100M signing Gareth Bale will be tested by the titleholders who aim to become the first team to win the Champions League trophy back-to-back.
During his spell at Barcelona as the senior team’s coach, Pep Guardiola toyed with the Spanish giants several times. Fresh from kicking out David Moyes and Manchester United in the quarter-finals, the Spanish manager will want to emulate former Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes by ending Real Madrid’s La Decima dream in the semis.
What will the public be offered between a remake of the 2013 International Champions Cup final, a re-match of the 2011/12 Champions League final, an all-Spanish affair or an odd pairing of underdogs Atleti with reigning champions Bayern?
