How many FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 spots are available and which teams can qualify?
Three spots are still up for grabs. Those are:
Wales vs Scotland/Ukraine in the European World Cup Playoffs Path A final
Due to the ongoing war, Ukraine's Path A semifinal playoff vs. Scotland was postponed until June. The winner of this tie will go on to face Wales in the final, with Gareth Bale and Co. having beaten Austria 2-1.
The Intercontinental Playoffs
AFC vs CONMEBOL: The winner of the UAE/Australia vs. Peru playoff will qualify for this year's FIFA World Cup.
CONCACAF v OFC: The winner of the Costa Rica vs New Zealand playoff will qualify for this year's FIFA World Cup.
How does the FIFA World Cup draw work?
The group stage will consist of eight groups of four teams. The 32 participants, three of which are yet to be determined, will be split into four pots. Qatar, as the hosts, enter Pot 1 and have been assigned to the A1 slot, meaning they will be in Group A. Of the remaining 31 teams, the seven highest-ranked nations join the Gulf state in Pot 1. The next eight highest-ranked nations (8-15) enter Pot 2, the eight after that (16-23) enter Pot 3, while the five lowest-ranked countries as of March 31, 2022, enter Pot 4. They will be joined by UEFA's Path A winner (Wales/Scotland/Ukraine) and the two Intercontinental Playoffs winners (UAE/Australia/Peru and Costa Rica/New Zealand).
With Qatar entering Group A due to their hosting rights, the remaining seven teams from Pot 1 will be placed in Groups B through H. Each group will contain one team from each pot, meaning two teams from the same spot cannot face off in the first round. Additionally, except for UEFA nations, two teams from the same confederation cannot be drawn in one group.
