With every passing week the battle for the top four takes a new turn, last night’s draw between Arsenal and Everton seemed to have benefited Chelsea who will aim to leapfrog their London counterparts in the table tonight.
With Manchester United needing just seven points to lift their 20th Premier League crown and Manchester City all but guaranteed second spot, focus in the Premier League in the coming weeks would be on the performances of Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and Everton, four teams vying for a place in next season’s edition of the UEFA Champions League.

Last night, in a heated Premier League encounter, Arsenal and Everton played a goalless yet entertaining draw at Emirates Stadium. The result means that Everton’s chances of making a long-awaited return to the Champions League remain bleak, while Arsenal have given north London rivals Tottenham, a shadow of an opportunity to return to the top four.

Tonight, Chelsea will play Fulham at Craven Cottage in what is one of the most relatively peaceful London rivalries. Although Fulham have been in decent form of late, it is safe to say that Chelsea are in with a great chance of claiming all three points tonight that will take them to third place in the league standings.

As things stand, both Chelsea and Tottenham know that they have their fate in their own hands. Arsenal are currently in third place but have played two games more than Chelsea and one more than their bitter rivals Tottenham which means that if both sides are able to register wins in their upcoming encounters, Arsenal will be risking missing out on Champions League football for the first time in 16 years.

Everton on the other hand are at a risk of failing to make their hard work pay off, as a top four finish might seem to be unachievable for the Toffees. Regardless of the fact that David Moyes’ men played like lions throughout the campaign, they might have to take part in Europe’s second most prestigious competition next season.

However, one should not snatch Everton’s achievements away from them and a place in the Europa League for next season should be considered as a due reward for the effort they have put in this season.

In short, both Spurs and Blues have a great chance of sealing a place in the top four and any hiccups from here onwards will be of their own making. Spurs in particular, should consider themselves lucky after they let Arsenal displace them in the league table, but now have a top four finish within their sights being only two points behind their counterparts with a match in hand.

Tonight’s game at Craven Cottage will not be a walk in the park for Chelsea but should be a relatively easier fixture for a side that boasts one of the best offensive units in the country. In the shape of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, Oscar, Demba Ba and Fernando Torres, Chelsea have a very good attacking side that will put Martin Jol’s men under a lot of pressure.

Defeat will not be an option for the Blues tonight and in case it happens, it will mean that the team has let their own hard work gone to waste.
