Los Albicelestes will be looking to extend their lead at the summit of the South American World Cup qualifiers in a tricky visit to Santiago.
Argentina will be hoping to defend competition leadership when they travel to Santiago to take on a beleaguered Chile in what promises to be a hotly-contested South American World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.

Alejandro Sabella's side come into the clash in sensational form after having thrashed South American champions Uruguay 3-0 in a one-sided River Plate derby in Mendoza on Friday.

In that game, Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi put on a marvellous display, as he guided Los Albicelestes to victory with two goals, with the other goal coming from attacking partner Sergio Aguero.

Chile, on the other hand, enter the contest having suffered two consecutive defeats against Colombia and most recently Ecuador, results that definitely don't favour their chances of reaching Brazil 2014.

Claudio Borghi, the Argentine coach of Chile, is currently under-fire and a third consecutive defeat could lead to his imminent dismissal, even if the Chileans face the most in-form team of the competition.

Chile will be boosted by the return of Gary Medel, after missing the game against Ecuador. The presence of the Sevilla midfielder will surely be of great benefit to the side, because he is the kind of player that rises to the big occasion.

If La Roja are to obtain a desirable result on Tuesday, they must focus on not receiving any red cards, as the dismissals of Pablo Contreras and Arturo Vidal gave them little chance of returning to Chile with anything from Quito on Friday.

According to reports, Borghi will feature Alexis Sanchez, Jean Beausejour and Sebastian Pinto in Chile's attack. The coach is clearly aware of the fact that if Chile have any possibilities of beating Argentina they will have to take full advantage of the speed that they have in their attacking third.

Meanwhile, Sabella is expected to field an identical starting eleven as to the one that beat Uruguay, with the exception that Marcos Rojo, who sustained an injury in Mendoza, will be replaced by Napoli defender Hugo Campagnaro.

The fact that Messi, Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain are in ideal condition means that Los Albicelestes are likely to put on another good showing at the Estadio Nacional.

In the first match of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers back in 2011, Argentina hammered Chile 4-1 at the Estadio Monumental, courtesy of a hat-trick from Higuain and a goal from Messi.

Of the 83 meetings between the sides, Argentina have won 55, compared to a mere 6 for Chile.
