FA Cup holders Manchester City tried to snatch the Community Shield from Women’s Super League champions Chelsea, but center back Millie Bright’s long-range effort led the Blues to glory.

Emma Hayes' decision to start Sam Kerr over Bethany England in the Women's Community Shield proved to be almost costly. The Australian forward missed a couple of chances that England, Chelsea's top scorer in the 2019-20 WSL with 14 goals, would have likely buried.

However, Man City forward Chloe Kelly had the best chance of the half, striking the outside of the left post. The miss gave the Blues relief going into halftime with a scoreless draw.

Chelsea was the more dominant side in the second half and center back Millie Bright broke the deadlock in the 66 minute with an attempt from 30 yards out.

Bright rates her goal at Wembley over her away goal against City last season.

"I scored at City away and that was pretty decent but scoring at Wembley is unbelievable," Bright said after the game. "What a start because we are going for a lot of trophies this year."

Scottish forward Erin Cuthbert sealed the win with a goal in added time, making it 2-0.

It was a tough day for Manchester City. The team has gone through a lot of change in the off-season with head coach Gareth Taylor managing his first match and USWNT' Samantha Mewis making her English football debut.

Chelsea's first FA Women's Super League match fixture will be against Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 9:30 a.m. ET.
