The last time the two sides met, it resulted in a 0-0 draw, but there have been plenty of goals in their more recent meetings, with six netted over two legs in last season's Champions League, and 12 from their prior clashes in the Premier League during the 2017/2018 season. As such, fans will be hoping plenty of fireworks when the two lock horns at the Etihad Stadium this Wednesday in both teams' first match of 2019.

As of now, Liverpool are still the only unbeaten side in the Premier League, and boast a comfortable six point lead over second-placed Tottenham. That means that win, lose, or draw, they will still be on top of the table regardless of the result against Manchester City. Still, this game will be even more fascinating due to the fact that Liverpool have struggled recently upon trips to the Etihad, with just one win from their last nine games.

But curiously, Jurgen Klopp has become like an Achilles' heel of sorts for Pep Guardiola, as the Spanish tactician has struggled when it comes to facing his German opponent. With seven defeats across all competitions, including twice in the Champions League, Klopp is the one manager who has inflicted the most frustration on his highly-decorated counterpart, and he certainly will be hoping to make it an eighth on Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, Guardiola, who saw his side pick up a 3-1 win over Southampton to end a two match losing streak, will not want to end up on the wrong end of the score-line on Wednesday. Why? Because, despite his struggles against Klopp, he has never lost back to back home games in his entire managerial career.
