Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed that he was never impressed by the Ballon d’Or shortlist. Lionel Messi, Xavi and Iniesta made the cut, but Cristiano Ronaldo thinks that Casillas should have got a place in there.
The FIFA Ballon d’Or 2010 award nomination was actually controversial from start to finish based on the public’s opinion. Already, the initial 23-man shortlist excluded Ajax’s goal poacher Luis Suarez. However, this omission perhaps found a reason based on the Uruguayan’s shameful behaviour during and after La Celeste Olimpica’s quarter-final match against Ghana in which he infamously used his hand to prevent the Black Stars from cruising into the semi-finals of the competition.

What remained inexplicable to many, though, was the exclusion of Inter Milan’s Wesley Sneijder from the FIFA Ballon d’Or’s 3-man shortlist. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo wasn't expected to make it for yet another year following his poor display during the 2010 World Cup. This also added to the fact that he was unable to inspire Real Madrid to cup success in the 2009/2010 season despite achieving good individual records.

But whereas a great portion of football fans wanted Sneijder to be a final contender for the prize, Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo had tipped Iker Casillas to be among the top 3 nominees. Tribalfootball.com quoted Ronaldo as saying, as the star winger explained his choice which never materialized:

“Casillas is a field player and I think that he’s got the same value as the others. My opinion is that Iker should have been among the 3 nominees this year.

“Well, he won the World Cup. He did great things...”

At most football pundits’ surprise, it was Argentina’s Lionel Messi who emerged as the FIFA Ballon d’Or 2010 winner – beating World Cup champions Xavi and Andres Iniesta in the process. This season, Cristiano Ronaldo has already been tipped by many as the favourite to challenge Lionel Messi for next year’s prestigious gong.

In this current campaign, CR7 has already scored 30 goals only 27 matches in all competitions. Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, however, comes behind with 25 goals in 24 matches. On Thursday night, Cristiano Ronaldo will have the chance to add more goals to his tally as Real Madrid will be clashing against Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey.

In this particular tournament, the Portuguese winger has already netted 4 times in 3 games compared to Lionel Messi’s single goal in 3 matches as well. The Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi war is set to last until the end of the season... and who will edge the other?
