Marcelo is the latest name in a list of high-profile players to fall victim to tax evasion accusations. This is according to AS, with the Spanish publication reporting that the Real Madrid man has plead guilty to the charges.
According to the report, the charges have to do with unpaid taxes linked to the player’s image rights. As a result of the Brazilian’s plea, he will pay $583,955.24 to Spain's inland revenue in fine.
The Real Madrid full-back reportedly appeared in court on Tuesday morning in a very short affair. According to sources present at the court, the South American ace showed up for a 10-minute hearing.
Marcelo is the latest player to be brought down by tax evasion, although the player will only pay a fine and will avoid jail time. Both Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano received similar punishment for their tax evasion charges, with La Pulga and his father being slapped with a 21-month suspended jail sentence.
The full-back isn’t the only figure in football associated with Los Blancos to get sucked into tax fraud controversy. Jose Mourinho, once the manager at Santiago Bernabeu, faces similar allegations, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo – two of several Jorge Mendes clients accused of tax fraud.
The four-time Ballon d’Or winner, however, continues to plead his innocence and refused to accept the charges in favor of a fine. If he loses his case, the Real Madrid superstar could end up spending time behind bars.
Zidane’s side will be in action this midweek, but neither Cristiano nor Marcelo is expected to feature. The Champions League holder takes on Fuenlabrada in the Copa del Rey boasting a 2-0 first-leg advantage.
