Sevilla manager Eduardo Berizzo has been rocked by an unfortunate illness. The club has announced that their tactician has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
The Spanish side revealed this after their 3-3 draw with Liverpool. Los Hispalenses fell 3-0 down in the first half but came back to earn a point with their manager watching from the touchline.
“Sevilla FC's medical department has confirmed that First Team coach, Eduardo Berizzo, has been diagnosed with prostatic adenocarcinoma,” an official statement read.
“Future medical tests will determine a course of treatment.
“Sevilla FC wants to show maximum support to its manager in these moments and wishes him a prompt recovery.”
Rumors had already spread of Berizzo’s diagnosis prior to Sevilla’s announcement. The club, however, waited until Wednesday before announcing the sad news.
The manager’s future at the club remains unknown. Berizzo, who left Celta Vigo for the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium, has been instrumental in the club’s steady Champions League and La Liga campaigns.
On Tuesday, he helped his team overturn a 3-0 deficit against the Reds to earn a draw in their Champions League tie. The manager reportedly informed his players about his diagnosis in the dressing room during the break, but that did not dampen their spirits.
Wissam Ben Yedder scored a brace before Guido Pizarro netted the equalizer in injury time. The players all rushed over to the manager in celebration, embracing the 48-year-old.
