Match Facts & Stats

  • Egypt were the first African team to qualify for a World Cup in 1934
  • The Pharaohs last appearance at a WC was in 1990
  • On both instances, they failed to win a single game
  • Uganda, meanwhile, have never qualified for a World Cup
  • The Cranes have only won once in the previous 17 meetings with the Pharaohs – 5-1 in an international friendly in 1965

Preview

As things stand, it's Egypt who are looking good to qualify for their first ever World Cup since 1990. Only top spot in each group gets to head to Russia next year, and the Pharaohs are leading the way with six points out of six after two games. However, Uganda are not too far behind, and a win would see them leapfrog Egypt into top spot. That being said, the Cranes have a frustrating record against the Pharaohs, with just one win in their last 17 meetings, and that was way back in 1965. Can they overcome their long-standing hoodoo as they chase their ambitious goal of a first-ever World Cup appearance next year?

Match Facts & Stats

  • Congo Brazzaville have never qualified for a World Cup
  • Ghana are seeking their fourth straight qualification
  • The Black Stars first made their debut at the 2006 edition in Germany

Here's how things are looking in Group E ahead of the matches:

Preview

Of the four sides in this quartet, it goes without saying that many had expected Ghana to be leading the way. After all, Egypt have only featured at two World Cups, and the last was back in 1990. Uganda and Congo, meanwhile, have never appeared and are seeking to make their debuts. The Black Stars have made three prior apparances, albeit their last showing in 2014 was nothing short of a disaster. And so far, this campaign has not started off on the right footing. With just one point from two games, it's pretty much win or bust for the side.

Kwesi Appiah has opted to include a quintet of debutants, including Edwin Gyasi, Gideon Waja, Lawrence Ati, Joseph Attamah Larweh, Isaac Sackey, whilst familiar faces Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew and Asamoah Gyan are all part of the squad. The Black Stars will take on Congo in a double header and will obviously need to pick up all six points in order to give themselves a fighting chance of catching Uganda and Egypt in the race for top spot in Group E.

Broadcast info - Nigeria vs. Cameroon

Who's playing: With a comfortable lead over the chasing pack, Nigeria aim to effectively shut down the battle for a ticket to the 2018 World Cup with a win over Cameroon on Friday. However, they are taking on the reigning AFCON champions, and so this obviously will be much easier said than done.

What time: Friday, September 1st at 09:00 PST/12:00 EST/16:00 GMT/17:00 WAT

What stadium: This game will be played at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. Located in Uyo, Nigeria, this venue can seat up to 30.000 fans at max capacity.

Match Facts & Stats

  • Nigeria have won ten out of their 20 meetings with Cameroon
  • Cameroon have won just four - the last of these was back in 2000 at the AFCON
  • Cameroon are the current holders of the AFCON title

Preview

Nigeria have opted to mix up in between the posts. As per Super Eagles boss Gernot Rohr, Ikechukwu Ezenwa will be the man to start against Cameroon due to an injury to Daniel Akpeyi and Carl Ikeme being diagnosed with lukemia earlier this summer. This will be the first of two games between these two strong footballing nations in just a few days, and a win for Nigeria will basically end the battle for top spot in their group.

However, Cameroon are the reigning AFCON champs and will obviously not go down without a fight. Despite being four points behind, a victory for the visitors would close the gap to just one and make things a lot more interesting when this double-header returns to their home turf next week. Will the Super Eagles shut the race down this Friday? Or will Les Lions Indomptables come roaring back to shake things up?
