England will play their last UEFA Euro 2016 group stage match on Monday, with the Three Lions guaranteed a third spot finish but not assured a spot in the next round. Roy Hodgson’s crew will lock horn with Slovakia needing only a point to secure progression, though a win will earn them a first-spot finish.
Despite this UEFA Euro 2016 game being a high-stake clash, Hodgson is believed to be plotting a gamble with his starting eleven for the St. Etienne clash, as six players are expected to be dropped – or rather rested – for Monday’s game.
This is as written by the Guardian, with the British publication reporting that the biggest name to miss out on Hodgson’s starting eleven is Wayne Rooney. This is despite the fact that the England captain is one of a few experienced members in their youthful UEFA Euro squad.
The Man United ace was present in both of their previous two games, and his substitution off the pitch in their opening clash with Russia was followed by a stoppage-time equalizer. Hodgson, however, looks to incorporate Jordan Henderson and Jack Wilshere into the lineup, whilst Eric Dier looks to retain his spot.
The reshuffling won’t be limited to midfield, as full-backs Danny Rose and Kyle Walker are expected to be handed a breather. Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand are tipped to start in the Tottenham duo’s absence.
Elsewhere, Daniel Sturridge and Jamie Vardy – the heroes from the 2-1 comeback win over Wales – have earned their spot in the starting eleven, with the likes of Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane, and Dele Alli expected to start from the bench.
Hodgson’s plan is to rest key players ahead of the next round; however, England’s progression isn’t yet a done deal, thus his decision may raise a few eyebrows, or worse, backfire.
