A ticket to Wembley is at stake, as Brighton and Hove Albion gear up to host Sheffield Wednesday in the 2nd leg of their play-off semi-final match-up.
The winner of this encounter will move on to the playoff final, the last hurdle standing between one Championship club and the glorious English top-tier competition that is the Premier League, but the odds appear stacked against the Seagulls.
Chris Hughton’s crew missed out on an automatic promotion to join the likes of Leicester, Arsenal, and the Manchester duo to Middlesbrough after drawing 1-1 earlier this month, before falling to a 2-0 defeat against the Owls in the 1st leg on Friday.
This means a miraculous comeback is needed at Falmer Stadium in order for Brighton and Hove Albion to secure their spot alongside England’s big guns next season.
Team news – who’s fit and who’s not?
One of two roadblocks that stand in the way of Chris Hughton’s crew pulling off a comeback is their worrying injury list – the other (of course) being the huge deficit. In the 1st leg tie, Brighton were unfortunate to see four of their players succumb to injury, meaning they had to complete the game with 10 men after using up all their substitutes.
Connor Goldson, top scorer Tomer Hemed, Anthony Knockaert and Steve Sidwell all left the pitch prematurely on Friday due to knocks, with none of those four names expected to return for the return fixture. They could join Uwe Hünemeier, Solly March, and injury doubt Bobby Zamora on the sidelines.
Carlos Carvalhal’s side, on the other hand, have no fresh injury worries ahead of their trip to Falmer Stadium, as he looks destined to field the same squad in Monday's game from the 2-0 victory, with Modou Sougou and Joe Bennett the only absentees.
What does their head-to-head record tell us?
Albeit the tricky deficit, Brighton boast an impressive home record that may hand them the confidence they need, as they are undefeated in their last 10 games in which they hosted a club. However, the Seagulls have locked horns with the Owls on three occasions this term and are yet to taste victory.
The home side have not been able to beat the visitors in their last eight meetings in all competitions, with their last win over Sheffield Wednesday coming courtesy of a 3-0 triumph back in September 2012. In addition, Brighton have been unable to find the back of the net in recent run-ins with the Owls, having failed to score in their last six clashes.
