Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri has previously been linked with the Chelsea managerial position; however, GianlucaDiMarzio.com claim that another Italian tactician is now leading the race.
According to David Amoyal, who cites Fabrizio Romano, the front–runner is current Italian national team coach Antonio Conte, who the Italian news outlet report has met with and held talks with representative of Roman Abramovich’s in Rome.
Although they claim there is “confidence” that Conte will take over, a Stamford Bridge arrival will not occur until after he has lead the Azzurri to Euro 2016 in France.
The former Juventus boss – three consecutive Serie A titles being the highlight of his Bianconeri reign – is not the only manager in contention to replace Hiddink at the end of this campaign.
Amoyal labels Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone as the “main alternative” to Conte, being sponsored by former Rojiblancos stars Thibaut Courtois and Diego Costa, though prying him from the Liga BBVA giants will prove difficult.
Former Chile national team boss Jorge Sampaoli’s name is also in the toss, though he is far behind, but could prove the easiest of the three to land due to his availability, having left his position as La Roja manager back in January.
