The two sides have faced each other in scintillating European encounters but will now be playing in a less competitive environment. The Catalans come into pre-season at the back of a successful season which saw them winning the treble. Man United on the other hand failed to impress in their last campaign, but some impressive signings in the summer can allow them to launch a title assault this season.
Last season's star man Marouane Fellaini has his spot in the starting line-up put under scrutiny with the arrival of Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger. However the Belgian is willing to fight for his spot and will be working hard in pre-season to be ready for the new campaign.
"That's football, you know?" Fellaini said. "We have some great players, so I have to fight for my place, that's it.
"No, I am fine, because I train every day. I have trained now for two weeks and slowly I will get there. It is just important that I don't have any injuries and that I am fit when I start my season.
"The pre-season is important because I need to be fit for all the season and working hard now makes that easier to achieve."
The former Everton man endured a turbulent debut season at the theatre of dreams but found his feet last season and was a regular member in Van Gaal's starting eleven.
"It started early, in October, when I scored the goal at West Brom," Fellaini said. "From that moment, I felt confidence and good with the team and my teammates.
"I have always felt good with the players at United, but with the supporters it was difficult a little bit when I arrived. It changed and we did some great things as a team and finished fourth with a great manager. I tried hard to be in the team and the manager trusts me."
The Red Devils picked a 3-1 win over San Jose Earthquakes in their last outing with new signing Memphis Depay getting on the score sheet. Juan Mata and Andreas Pereira also added goals as United picked up an easy win.
Barcelona on the other hand were against Steven Gerrard's new side LA Galaxy, a match the defending Spanish champions won by a 2-1 score line. Luis Suarez was among the scorers with Sergio Roberto also finding the back of the net ten minutes into the second half.
Tommy Meyer struck in injury time but it was too late to push for a comeback. Last time the two sides met was in a friendly match back in 2012 which ended in a stalemate with Barcelona recording a victory through penalties.
