Struggling with form, the Reds’ 3-1 win over Bournemouth means they will face Jose Mourinho’s side in the semi-finals.

After crashing out of the Champions League group stage, then losing 3-0 away to Manchester United on Sunday, Liverpool’s Capital One Cup tie with Bournemouth was a must-win encounter for the Reds.

Needing a victory at the Goldsands Stadium, Brendan Rodgers’ crew triumphed over the Championship side 3-1, as Raheem Sterling recaptured his goalscoring form, netting a brace to send the Merseyside club through to the semi-finals.

The young English attacker opened the scoring in the 20th minute, his first goal for both club and country since September. Summer acquisition Lazar Markovic, who got sent off in Liverpool’s clash with Basel, doubled his team’s lead seven minutes later, before Sterling completed his brace six minutes after the break.

Bournemouth grabbed a consolidation goal in the 57th minute through former Everton player Dan Gosling, but it wasn’t enough, as Liverpool marched their way into the last 8 of the League Cup, setting up a thrilling clash with English Premier League leaders Chelsea.

With Jose Mourinho’s side cruising in the league, and Liverpool failing miserably to reach last season’s heights without Luis Suarez, many have already written of the Reds’ chances in the league cup, penciling down Chelsea for a spot in the final.
