Preview: Lyon vs Bayern
Given that they finished seventh in Ligue 1 - which saw them even change coaches during the season - and as runners-up in the Coupe de la Ligue, no one truly expected Lyon to get to this juncture in the Champions League. Les Dogues won just two of their group stage games and narrowly squeaked into second place ahead of Benfica, who ironically, beat them 2-1 in their first meeting. In the round of 16, they earned a narrow 1-0 win over Serie A champions Juventus, but still, many were expecting that to be the end of the road for Rudi Garcia's side as they headed to Turin for the second leg.
The Bianconeri have been far from impressive under Maurizio Sarri's tenure, but superstar attacker Cristiano Ronaldo has consistently done well to help drag his team forward wherever necessary. And the second leg was no exception, as the Portuguese ace netted a brace to try to cancel out Memphis Depay's early effort. Nonetheless, it wasn't enough to prevent Juve from crashing out early and ensured that Lyon booked a quarter-finals berth to take on English giants Manchester City.
In one of the more shocking results of this tournament, Lyon defeated Pep Guardiola's side 3-1 with two very late goals from Moussa Dembele enough to shock the Citizens and set up a tantalizing semi-finals clash with ruthless Bayern.
The Bavarian powerhouse have been unstoppable all season in this tournament, and it's no surprise they're the highest scoring side, with 39 goals thus far. Robert Lewandowski is arguably having the best season of his career, as he has scored 14 times and is only three away from tying the record of 17 set by Cristiano Ronaldo during the 2013/2014 campaign. Die Roten will coem into this match having demolished Barcelona 8-2, which set numerous records in the process. So far, they have yet to lose a single game in this tournament.
That's right. Bayern have won all of their Champions League games, including strolling through the group stages with six wins, crushing Chelsea over two legs in which Lewandowski either scored or assisted the goals, and finally ending Lionel Messi's Champions League hopes with their brilliant performance during the 8-2 demolition in the quarter-finals. It was quite reminiscent of their 7-0 humiliation of the Spanish titans during the 2012/2013 season, after which they booked their ticket in an historic all-German final against Dortmund, and as we know, Bayern won the biggest Klassiker clash to date 2-1.
As such, Bayern are the obvious favorites here. That being said, Hans Dieter Flick won't underestimate Lyon, as they've beaten Juventus and Manchester City to get to this stage, so no one can accuse Les Dogues of having "easy" opponents. Nonetheless, no one can dispute that die Roten have been absolutely outstanding since Flick took over, and are well on course to potentially make it another Treble win this season after already winning the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal.
